There seems to be a gender gap on Wikipedia. As an editor, I see many more men than women, and that is also what we can estimate from surveys and the (few) people who identify their gender. Having very few visible women around leads to a male-dominated environment. Such an environment may be all fine in some contexts, but not when we are attempting to sum up “all human knowledge”. Some subjects are simply outside my knowledge sphere – I know that some women have menstrual pain, but I do simply not have enough insight in the issue to know how important that aspect is. That example may seem crass, but the point applies to most subjects: There are angles and nuances that just come more readily to women, and we need those, too.
